Alfred was born on March 12, 1924 in the Town of Day, Marathon County, to George and Pauline (Schalk) Guldan. He attended St. Andrews parochial school through the eighth grade and then furthered his education attaining his G.E.D. while he was a member of the United States Navy. His early years were spent working on the family farm alongside his parents and brothers and sisters where he honed his mechanical aptitude and skills. He was driving the farms milk to the cheese factory at an early age and even held the capacity of babysitter for his older sisters children when the needs arose. He also became a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps when he was 16 years of age. For more than a year through CCC he was able to supplement the familys income with his earnings. He worked in various areas throughout central Wisconsin where his squad worked on creation of fire lanes, hiking trails, lodges, and headquarters buildings for county parks, some of which are still in service today. During that time he gained experience using heavy equipment and driving large trucks which would benefit him later in life.
He began his engagement of active service to his country in the United States Navy on May 1, 1943 and proudly served through January 22, 1946. He joined the United States Naval Reserves on March 29, 1947 and served until February 17, 1955. He achieved the rank of Gunners mate 3rd class and earned ribbons of Asiatic-Pacific, European-African with 1 bronze star, American Theater and a victory medal. While serving in the Navy he encountered many lands and adventures to which he would regale us with for many years to come.
Alfred and Grace Ella Hartnett were united in marriage on June 3, 1948 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They were blessed with four children and cherished each others company for more than 60 years.
Alfred was a hardworking man who held jobs as a truck driver for Armour Meats, a mechanic for the City of Marshfield street department, a mechanic for Viegut Chevrolet in Athens, WI, hauling mobile homes to Alaska and helping establish a mobile community, a driver for HarMac, Inc. in Stratford, WI, and finally a long career at St. Josephs Hospital. For 27 years he worked in the capacity of maintenance and then as a stationary engineer in the boiler room, retiring in 1987. In his personal life Al was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was a compassionate, yet strong and gregarious individual and he was always more than willing to help family and friends whenever it was needed. His talents as an electrician, mechanic and plumber were given freely to parents, children and friends. He has touched the lives of many.
Al always had a love of camping and traveling and many family vacations were a station wagon loaded with tent and equipment and kids. This later evolved into a pull behind camper which was replaced with a mini-motor home and was eventually replaced with a large Winnebago Motor Home which was his pride and joy. Al was also very proud of the fact that he had attained his pilots license after his discharge from the Navy. Al and Grace traveled many winters to Texas to visit their daughter and to visit with other friends and relatives along the annual journey. After their children had grown, their traveling companions were their two miniature dachshunds, first Mitzie and then Pixie. Sadly, illness and the passing of his beloved Grace caused his rambling days to end, but he still had Pixie at his side till the end.
To many he was known as Blackie, Brownie or Big Al and his bullsh*tting ability was legendary. He endeared himself to many who knew or encountered him. In retirement he could be found acting in his role as the neighborhood foreman when there would be construction or utility work being done in the vicinity. His life experiences took him many places and in later years he would proclaim that I have been just about everywhere and done just about everything and Ive had a great life.
Alfred is lovingly survived by his four children, Christine Shaw, Audrey (Jack) Ably, Patricia (Greg) Adkins, and Timothy (Marilyn) Guldan, all of Marshfield; four grandsons, Todd (Nancy) Shaw and their children Olivia, Abigail and Toddy, all of Colorado; Ethan (Sara) Ably and their children, Grace and Jackson, all of Minnesota; Adam (Emily) Ably and their child, Claire of Wisconsin; and Benjamin Guldan (Ashley Berg) of Minnesota; four granddaughters, Samantha Shaw and her daughter, Stephanie and grandchildren, Aiden and Spencer, all of Wisconsin; Erin (Kent) Cook and their children, Lydia June, Susana and Rosie, all of Wisconsin; Jessica (Eric) Bruger and their child, Silas, all of Michigan; and Ashley Guldan (Tim Drinka) of Wisconsin; eleven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
